NAACP backs cannabis worker protections (Newsletter: August 14, 2023)

The National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP) has come out in support of cannabis industry workers’ rights, in a marked shift away from the illegal drug’s longtime negative connotations. In a news release dated August 14, 2023, the civil rights organization announced their endorsement of the Cannabis Worker Protection Act, calling for measures to guarantee fair wages and safe working conditions for those employed in the marijuana industry. This move is being seen as a landmark decision in ensuring equity and opportunity in the space.

1) NAACP Unites Behind Cannabis Reform

The NAACP, the largest civil rights organization in the United States, has united around the issue of cannabis reform. With recreational and medical legalization appearing on the horizon in numerous US states, cannabis reform has become an important issue the NAACP has decided to champion. As a result, the organization has come out strongly in favor of both decriminalization and full legalization of cannabis.

The NAACP is motivated by the disproportionate impact drug laws have had on people of color. African-Americans are nearly four times more likely to be arrested for possession of cannabis than caucasians, even though usage rates are similar. With the legalization of cannabis, the NAACP hopes to bring about much needed reform to the criminal justice system and ensure the offending laws aren’t disproportionately impacting its members.

2) Worker Protections: The Cornerstone of Cannabis Success

Much of the success of the retail cannabis market depends upon the authenticity and dedication of its workforce. Providing protections for workers should be the cornerstone of any business operating in the cannabis industry. Legitimate protections create conditions of comfort and safety for employees, spurring greater business productivity and business security.

For cannabis businesses, workers should be provided not only with the protections regulations require, but also with additional assurances unique to retail cannabis. From clear vetting processes to sounder workplace ethics policies, there are a numerous ways employers can ensure workers feel respected, trusted, and secure. Such policies would include:

  • mandatory background checks for applicants and employees
  • skilled and certified staff training for workers
  • clearly defined workplace health and safety policies
  • measures to ensure employee privacy, particularly with regards to data protection
  • periodic workplace evaluations to promote quality control
  • contracts that guarantee job security, compensation, and health benefits

Protecting workers and supporting them in their work lives are essential considerations for any business operating in the cannabis industry. Building a safe and secure work environment is not only a legal obligation, but it is also an ethical duty of employers in the cannabis industry. Taking the time to ensure that workers are comfortable and secure goes a long way in the success and trustworthiness of Cannabis Retailers.

3) NAACP Furthers their Support for Cannabis Industry

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) continues to show their strong support for the cannabis industry. In recent years, the NAACP has made it clear that they believe having unrestricted access to marijuana is a civil right. They have been vocal in their efforts to advocate for the legalisation of cannabis as well as for more equity within the industry.

The NAACP has made an impressive effort to help level the playing field for minority business owners and operators who have traditionally faced uphill battles even when it comes to pursuing business opportunities in sectors that are considered legal and established. They have worked to support cannabis startups to ensure that entrepreneurs of colour are able to benefit from the emergent and lucrative industry.

4) New Protections Help Shield Workers from Unfair Job Losses

With the increasing uncertainty that comes with job security, thankfully, new protections have been put in place to help shield workers from unfair job losses. Some of the protections afforded to workers include:

  • The introduction of a uniform and transparent hiring process, such as the National Employment Standards
  • The ability to challenge any job losses if they are perceived to be unfair
  • Stronger workplace safety and protection policies

The introduction of these new protections has provided much needed security and stability for many workers. These regulations provide a workplace that is free from bias and harmful practices, meaning employees can be sure that if they are let go, it is for a justifiable reason. Plus, with information about rights and responsibilities readily available, workers are better equipped to protect their job security.

The NAACP’s support of cannabis worker protections demonstrates their tireless commitment to fight for workers’ rights across industries. This is yet another example of the NAACP’s long history of advocacy supporting justice and equality in the workplace.
